I’m in love with SOIL!!
At our place there’s plenty to love as our soil is meters deep. Derived from volcanic action 23 million years ago, our deep red soil is a complex combination of solids, liquids, gases, microorganisms and micro flora. Why is soil so important? Because it is the foundation for our food; the health of the soil is reflected in the health of the produce. This is why, as farmers, we strive to maintain healthy fertile soil.
One of the techniques we use to do this is to grow green manure crops. This has been done since 60 A.D. and sustained the farms of the Roman Empire! We also use wonderful compost to improve the soil.
We grow a variety of herbs, leafy greens, Asian greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, snow peas, peas to name just a few. Especially enjoyable is growing the unusual varieties such as yellow snopeas or round zucchinis! Over the next few years our fruit trees will come into production. We have some interesting varieties, such as white mulberries and pineapple guavas as well as old time favorites like figs and citrus. Berries also feature – we are concentrating on strawberries and tropical raspberries. We supply local consumers with fresh produce at the Byron Bay Farmers market, as well as supplying restaurants and wholesalers in QLD and NSW.
This year we are also growing some boutique gourmet lines – microgreens and edible flowers. Microgreens are plants more developed than sprouts but smaller than baby leaf produce. They are grown in soil whereas sprouts aren’t. Microgreens are power packed with nutrition and taste.
Edible flowers have been used since Roman times to add interest and colour to dishes. But they are also just as nutritious and flavoursome as the plants from which they’re derived . Try some rocket flowers to see what we mean! We grow a range of beautiful flowers – favorites are sunflowers and violas.
